Dear Commissioners,

One relatively easy and cheap way to better the county would be to pay attention to the litter EVERYwhere along Route 30 (and the few times I've been up 222 recently) from the touristy areas all the way west to the river (and vice versa). The county looks like a third world country as far as the amount of the litter goes. These "litter pick up" groups/clubs who sponsor segments along the county and city roads are a joke. Raise your hand if you've ever seen one of these groups actually picking up litter. I know that most of the trash along Route 30 is debris falling from the garbage trucks that clog up the roads daily going to/fro the garbage dump in York Co. I've seen the debris fly off these trucks every day. If the county/state cannot force these garbage hauling companies to pay for or provide the labor to clean up our roads, then by god, would someone with the county take the "bulls by the horn" and not wait on all of the numerous townships along Route 30 to take the initiative and get the CRAP picked up that dots our landscape!!! It is Lancaster County, not Mountville or West Hempfield, that our visitors are going to remember looked like a pig's stye.

Good one. Lots of trash-trucks use these roads, everyday. Can't the govmt. set-up, maintain, and operate some of those truck weight and safety inspection stations ? Use some of the funds collected for penalties/violations, to pay for roadway trash/debris clean-up efforts.

I have. On more than one occasion.

Did you ever see the white trash bags along the road, usually on a Monday morning? That is the result of a volunteer clean-up.

Count me in. As a group, we clean our "little patch of heaven" regularly, and have for over ten years.

I've taken part in corporate-sponsored Adopt-a-Highway cleanups in the past, and I have also seen various crews doing the work many times, such as this past weekend on I-476 near Philadelphia.

That said, I agree that many local highways are abysmally filthy and create a lousy image for the county.
