By golly .... the reward, one month later, is up to a whopping $17,000, with most of it donated by the Haines family. This amount of money is probably about equal to the amount of overtime pay that each of the 10 detectives working on the Haines murder will receive as a bonus for the extra hours spent working this year.

Don't get me wrong ... the detectives need to earn the money, but the fact that Pennsylvania does not have a significant reward program in place is just outrageous! What does one of the 20+ slots license fees to the state sell for .... $3 million each?

Reward money would be a timely topic to discuss in state government, showing that the peoples' business also counts, not just the special interests.

My concern with the whole reward money thing is this: what does it say about society when we have to coerce people into doing the right thing with thousands of dollars? If I knew what happened, I would call the police right away. I would not wait until the reward money reached a certain amount.

Yes, but violent criminals and their close associates have a different value system than you and me.

Money talks ... not conscience. The amount and terms of a reward must exceed the level that will enable the person "snitching" to move themselves and family out of the area for their physical safety after the "dime is dropped" on a cold-blooded murderer.

of course "PEOPLE" WILL MENTION THAT BRET LOVELACE and a local ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY contributed to the story. it was a positive article in the sense of a "heinous" crime of a family getting national attention and perhaps helped in raising the reward $$$.
