"He would not say how the homicide happened, whether or not it was random, or if neighbors should take extra safety precautions."
Huh? I would think this is something that neighbors should know... My condolences to the family of this fine man.

I worked with Mr. Diener for many years and he was a fine person. My condolences to the family as well.

I guess that the message to be gained from this senseless tragedy is that neighbors better be prepared to defend themselves and their own property. Counting on local government to do this for them may not be in the neighbors' (or anyones') best interests. Heck, the neighbors can't even get an opinion from the local government leaders on whether they should take extra safety precautions, or not ......

Since it is obviously more difficult to control those lawless people who murder at will than it is to control the law-abiding public, what we should all learn from this is that more gun control legislation will make us "feel" better. And after all, if we feel good, at least something is being done by government on our behalf!
