but what about the parents in a clothing store (for themselves) at 9pm at night with little kids in tow... i see it all the time. and forget about going to walmart after 11pm and thinking it will be kid free. i see kids, that should be in bed, out and about at all hours and it doesn't seem like the parents are just running into the store for life saving prescriptions... especially not in the music dept. at walmart at midnight.

Of course you will find exceptions to the rule, but for the most part parents are trying to do a good job.

Of course, you wouldn't set out for a day of shopping with a tired and hungry child, but not everything can be planned perfectly. For example, if you have to get some medicine for a sick kid on the way home from the doctor's office, you may have no choice but to stop at the pharmacy and take the child in with you. Obviously, someone with howling children and a cart full of stuff isn't in this situation, but stuff happens sometimes even to the parents who are trying really hard to do everything right.

THANK YOU, Nona for a nice, polite answer to a nice, polite question. Obviously, some other parents must have a chip on their shoulder...I simply wanted an answer to a simple question and I get "because I'm a horrible parent. Is that what you wanted to hear?". Of course not. I'm not five, and I wasn't insulting anyone. I just wondered why I see so many parents with a cartful of things for themselves dragging around obviously tired kids. I reaize that sometimes it's unavoidable, but I very often see things like that.

I didn't mean to offend you with my posts. Just clarifying some misconceptions I thought you might have. I think you missed an earlier part of the thread where there was discussion along the lines of "most parents don't care enough to pick up their children when they're crying anywmore." My scenario was presented to demonstrate that snap judgments based upon a few moments of observation of a stranger's situation does not equate to reality. I apologize if you feel that you were caught in the crossfire!

BeingReal
When I was single dad, more than one time I had to drag my poor baby along to CVS late at night when she had a fever-- just didn't have anyone to call to stay in the house and had to do the tough thing. I'm not sure people judged me... nor do I care if they did... I was doing what had to be done.

Those were tough and lonely nights when she was wheezing and couldn't quite get settled... or had a fever... In a drastic emergency I'd have woken someone up, but most times just toughed it out.

It gives me a great sensitivity to parents and the hard roles they have in today's upside down society.
